Graduating in 1980 with a BA (Hons) in 3D Design, specialising in Jewellery and Silversmithing Carol then gained her PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in 1981 and started teaching Craft Design and Technology.

For the past 10 years Carol has been a member of the Guild of Enamellers and has gained her City and Guilds in Enamelling on Copper. From here Carol has exhibited her work in various galleries including London, Oxford, Holland and Spain, been Chairman of the Guild of Enamellers, organised and facilitated large scale enamel panel workshops, and taught enamel workshops in schools, galleries, church halls and her own studio. Carol is currently Bursary Secretary for the Guild of Enamellers, and member of the BSOE (British Society of Enamellers) and has had various articles and reports printed in both journals.

“I am passionate about all aspects of enamelling, and love the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and skills to others, whether they are young or old, beginners or more experienced, there is always something new to learn or try.

I’m often inspired by land and sea scapes, decaying nature and metals. Rusty corrugated roofs are a favourite, and driftwood on a beach, windswept tree trunks and skeletal leaves are often photographed along with patterns in brickwork, doorways and anything vaguely square!

I tend to work mainly by sifting enamel onto flat or formed copper sheet, the techniques such as masking, stencils, riso screens, sgraffito, liquid enamels, metal forming and high firing are used to create one off unique pieces of art. These include bowls, panels, tiles, jewellery and large scale panels, as well as 3D shapes and objects."

"I have attended many different workshops led by national and international artists, mainly through the Guild of Enamellers and the BSOE. I have also visited commercial enamel factories, including AJ Wells, Bilston Enamels & WH Darby, who produce everything from large enamelled signage for London Underground to delicate small boxes, clocks and tie pins, to corporate items including gifts, chains of office and trophies.”

Carol has recently run workshops for Bilston Craft Gallery & Museum, & New Brewery Arts Cirencester, for beginners, and is in the process of organising regular workshops at Plowden & Thompson in Stourbridge. For those who would like individual tuition, Carol has a fully fitted studio which can accommodate up to 2 students. Workshops can also be provided anywhere with suitable facilities, for up to 10 students where all equipment, tools and materials are provided.
